Htc Smart For The Masses
Posted: Feb 01, 2010 |

Taiwan-based HTC unveiled at the recent CES in Las Vegas the new category of mobile phones it calls “smartphone for masses.” It will be very affordable but no less powerful with not much technical compromises found in many affordable mobile phones.
HTC infused it with its renowned HTC Sense user Interface. It may look like an HTC smartphone when turned on, alright. It even looks and feels like one when turned off with a monoblock body dominated by a huge touchscreen found in many smartphones these days.
But it’s not a smartphone in the strictest sense of the word. And good thing it’s not going to be priced like one. It’s the new HTC Smart, earlier rumored to be the HTC Touch B, the first non-smartphone from HTC. It runs on the 300 MHz Qualcomm BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) Mobile Platform that is sure to attract mobile phone users who want value for the money.
A Blend of Good and Mediocre Features
This is another quad band GSM/EDGE/GPRS with 3G/UMTS and HSDPA at 3.6Mbps for a really good internet surfing and downloading experience. No WiFi but you get Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and a miniUSB 2.0 for local data transfers, wired and wireless.
What stands out is a generous 2.8” resistive LCD touchscreen with a mere 256 color support. A gravity accelerometer comes in standard to auto-rotate your viewing according to handset orientation – a feature that’s quite common these days on monoblock large screen handsets, smart or not.
Its multimedia features are at par with many decent mobile phones we’ve come to expect to have. You get capable media players that support the popular image, video and audio files. Its Bluetooth comes with A2DP support for wireless stereo earphones. The handset also provides you the option to use regular wired headphones using its 3.5mm jack. Then there’s FM radio.
Imaging is at par with many mobile phones sporting a 3 megapixel fixed focus camera with LED flash. Talk of striking a compromise; this could have been than many smartphone cameras if it had autofocus.
There’s an 1100 mAh Lithium ion battery that allows up to 7 hours of talk time on GSM and up to 19 days on standby when fully charged. Not bad, but could have been better. Internal memory is on the decent side with a 256 MB RAM and 256 MB ROM which can be expanded to accommodate all your multimedia files in a microSDHC card for up to 32 GB.
Conclusion
Whether HTC made the right moves getting itself down to the low-end markets for dumb phones, only time will tell. The HTC Smart has the appealing looks that anyone can mistake for a smartphone. Other than the absence of WiFi, a modestly specified touchscreen notwithstanding a large one, and none of the frills like GPS receiver, it has all the features that most capable non-smartphones have and even low-end smartphones. If it can be priced lower than the cheapest smartphone in the market, we reckon HTC has a sure winner and pushes the envelope for non-smartphones to come up to speed.

As a matter of fact, mobile phone manufacturers have subdivided their markets into different segments and have done the same for their units.
