Android the next Leader in Mobile OS Industry?
Many recent surveys predict that Android will be the next leader in Mobile OS. This is quite expected looking at the number of leading handset makers choosing Android as their OS for making Smartphones. Also there are many applications in the Android market which make users go for it. These two factors together gives Android a clear cut edge over its competitors like Blackberry and iPhone.
A recent report says that “One in three smart phones sold in the United States runs on Google’s Android software.” Analysts predict that the probable reasons for it could be that handsets like Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, Samsung, LG, HTC are all major players in the American industry and all of them have produced pretty good Android phones. However the researches dint give us any clue about how the Android Smartphones market fared in other parts of the world. Another survey from NPD showed Android phones outselling iPhone the smart-phone segment!!! All though many would shun this the people in the survey have strong affirmations to prove their point.

Innovating An Old Android With The Motorola Quench
In the Android world, we often wonder why new smartphones still come in the older versions like the 1.5 Cupcake and the 1.5 Donut when you already have the latest 2.1 Éclair. It seems the open source nature of the Android platform allows mobile phone makers to tweak what is available to give it a unique flavour.
You can port a proprietary UI to differentiate one that in many cases can trump new smartphone sporting the new versions. Thus, you have the Sense from HTC and the Rachel/UX from Sony Ericsson, to mention some. It becomes clearer now that no upgrade paths are forthcoming for these older versions. Upgrade them and you lose all the UI tweaking done to make them stand out in the crowd.
